Wall Catches Fire As Otters Pull Away From Gators, 73-52 | California State University, Monterey Bay

Cal State Monterey Bay started slowly, but led by Seattle University transfer Joe Wall (Portland/Jesuit HS), caught fire in the second half to roll past San Francisco State 73–52 Monday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Wall included a CSUMB record eight 3-pointers in his career–high 28 points, getting there with a sizzling second half performance for which SFSU had no answers. The junior forward missed his first five 3–point attempts before making eight of his last nine to break open what had been a close game for the opening 28 minutes.

SFSU led by one at the half, but the Otters took the lead for good on a Jordan Archie (Gardena/Bishop Montgomery HS) jumper barely a minute after the break. A J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) layup got the lead to double–digits at 47–37 and the Gators never got within three possessions of the lead over the final 12 minutes.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Joe Wall's seventh 3–pointer increased the Otter lead to 66–50 with 3:01 remaining.

RECORD TYING EFFORT… Joe Wall tied the CSUMB record for 3-pointers in a game with eight in Monday's 73–52 win over San Francisco State. He matched the mark set by Brandon Ward at Sonoma State on Feb. 2, 2012.

BACK WHERE HE BELONGS… By finishing Monday's game 8-of-14 from 3-point range, Joe Wall reclaimed the top spot on the CCAA's 3-point shooting percentage list at 46.5 percent. He increased his advantage on the list of most 3-pointers with 40 (4.4 per game).

CAREER–HIGH FOR WALL… Joe Wall scored 20+ points for the fifth time in nine games this season with his career–high 28 points Monday versus San Francisco State.

20–20–20–20–20 VISION… By reaching double figures for the fifth time in his first nine games, Joe Wall matches the feat first achieved by legendary Otter hall of famer Devoughn Lamont, who did it during the 2005–06 campaign. For longtime Otter fans who may be wondering, Davion Berry needed 10 games to do it at the start of the 2010–11 season.

WILLIAMS LENDS A HAND… Senior forward Jared Williams made his presence felt by dishing a career–high five assists in Monday's win over San Francisco State. His previous best with three helpers again Stanislaus State in 2020.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joe Wall 28; REBOUNDS: Joe Wall 9; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson/Jared Williams 5; BLOCKS: Joe Wall 2; STEALS: Jordan Archie/Joe Wall 2.

THE LAST WORD… "More than anything that happened between the lines tonight, I'm just really glad that this group of guys gets to go into the break on a high note. This is one of the closest teams I've had an opportunity to coach and they will be leaving to go back to their respective homes feeling good about this game and the possibilities for 2023." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take time off to enjoy the holidays before concluding their home-and-home series with San Francisco State Saturday, Dec. 31, in The City.
